Empowering Single Moms
Empowering unprivileged single moms in Colombia
In Colombia we have a very big social problem: men fly the nest leaving women with many children. These women have to work really hard to be able to provide for their children.
Unprivileged single moms live in the outskirts of the cities. Most of the jobs are in the cities. Therefore they have to travel long hours to start their 8-hour-job. And then they have come back.
In Bogota, unprivileged single moms start their day at 3 a.m. so they can be at their job around 7 or 8 a.m. Then they arrive home around 9 p.m. Because of these long hours, they can’t take care of their children.
If the children have good luck, they are taken care by their grandmother.
Others are taken care by the neighbour or by the big brother or sister. Unfortunately these means that most of the children are unattended and this is where they pick up bad habits or are abused.
Our aim is to empower unprivileged single moms to work at home or close by, so they can be flexible and be there for their children. Now we have 3 single moms working for us and we want to increase this number to have an even bigger impact.
